Tile Project to Celebrate Fall

Last fall I was invited to be a visiting artist for a week at Carolina Day, a private school in the Asheville area. The assumption was that the activity I organized would be clay related, however, I was given the freedom to integrate my lesson in any way I saw fit. When I discovered the students were exploring the cycle of life in their science class, I saw a great opportunity for extending this learning into a cooperative tile project. Using plants that were going to seed in the final stage of their lives, we made a wall hanging for the school's reception area. I hope to repeat this activity at a Montessori style school in my town, but this time using plants in the spring phase of their life cycle.
